BET’s “Sistas” & “Zatima” Star Devale Ellis just celebrated his first born Jackson 13th birthday and also talked about almost losing his wife Khadeen!
Devale took to Instagram to share:
Every year during Black Maternal Health week I get a reminder of why this week is so important. 13 years ago on the day Jackson was born I almost lost my soul mate. The day started off wild when I received a call that Kay Kay was going to be induced because of elevated liver enzymes. I get to the hospital as the doctor is administering the epidural. I was almost escorted out of the hospital after barking at the anesthesiologist for having to stick Kay 3 times because she wasn’t being careful. Kay screamed after what she felt was and electric charge down her leg with each try (that’s why our follow 3 births were all unmedicated.)
So we got through that, but Kay was restricted to the bed and her legs were numb. I stayed up all not and listened to the monitors while Kay drifted in and out of sleep. Around 8:45 Kay said she felt pressure but the monitors weren’t showing any contractions. I called for the doctor but she insisted it wasn’t time and left for a coffee. 30 seconds later Kay pushed twice and Jackson’s head and shoulder were out. He came QUICKLY.
Jackson was born with a club foot so everyone rushed him out of the delivery room to put a cast on his foot. I stayed to keep an eye on Kay. She looked gray and could barely speak. Kay was bleeding profusely from between her legs. I screamed for the doctor. Mimi ran into the hallway to get help. Kay was hemorrhaging from a lacerated cervix upon Jax’s arrival and rushed into emergency surgery.
After 27 stitches and a 4 hour surgery Kay avoided a blood transfusion and is alive to tell this story. GENTLEMEN ADVOCATE FOR YOUR PARTNERS!!! Be respectful, be firm, but most importantly be PRESENT. Your calmness can easy her pain. Your touch can speed up the birthing process. But most importantly YOUR PRESENCE could save her life. There were so many instances where Kay’s voice was ignored but they couldn’t ignore me. I wouldn’t allow it.
During my time preparing for Kairo’s birth I discovered the black maternal health crisis in this country and vowed to create a birthing experience Kay could thrive in.
Just call me DOULA DAD!💪🏾

Such a nice post.
